Local historian and Chairman of the Milton Heritage Society, Nick Saunders, visited a unique restoration project that has been undertaken by Pennyfarthing Homes on Thursday 2nd May. The George is an iconic, historic public house set in the heart of New Milton that dates back to 1905. The last pint was pulled in October 1999 and in 2020 Pennyfarthing Homes purchased the property to breathe new life into the building and create homes for local residents.

Nick Saunders has a keen interest in the property, fascinated by the striking architecture and unusual brick detailing adorning the façade and sides of the building. As a guest of Pennyfarthing Homes, Nick was graciously presented with a Victorian brick as a thoughtful gift, that was meticulously preserved by the restoration team.

He said: “I have a love of the local architecture and history in New Milton and witnessing the transformation of this old public house into homes for local people has given me great satisfaction, as the building will be preserved for generations to come. The bricks used in the 1905 construction of The George, most likely originated from a local brick kiln in nearby Gore, New Milton. I would like to thank Pennyfarthing for preserving a piece of this building’s rich history for me.”

Sheetal Smith, Pennyfarthing Homes, Sales and Marketing Director commented: “We are delighted to welcome Nick here today to view our new show apartment and meet our Construction Director, Phil Langdown who has poured his heart and soul into The George for the past 12 months, ensuring that the building’s heritage has been preserved whilst seamlessly integrating modern comforts for the future occupants.”

The unveiling of the new homes at The George on April 20th sparked significant interest with appointments already booked to view the charming show apartment. Comprising eight one- and two-bedroom apartments in the original structure and two contemporary coach houses nestled in the former grounds, this exclusive development promises to encapsulate the essence of historical charm and contemporary living.

Nick Saunders goes on to say: “It is a pleasure to meet some of the Pennyfarthing team and to understand more about the work that has gone into restoring this old building, safeguarding these timeless features. I have always marvelled at the detailing on the round windows, and the coat of arms which adds a unique dimension along with the striking staircase that greets visitors on entry.”
